EMPLOYMENT OF THE INDIAN ARMY FOR COLONIAL SERVICE.
London, February 27, noon. In the House of Commons on the 26th February Major Anson moved for tlie appointment of a Select Committee to inquire into the duties of' the British Army in India, and proposed tlie employment of the (Native) Indian Army in tlie British Colonies and military dependencies. Major O'Reilly proposed (as an amendment) that the inquiry should be made with a view to ascertaining the best means of organising an Asiatic force for service in those colonies possessing a suitable climate. General Peel, the Secretary of State for "War, consented to the appointment of a select committee, but insisted that it was nccessary to retain a certain number of British troops in. India, doubted whether the colonies would be content to see their British forces replaced by Asiatic regiments, and said that only nine regiments could be so replaced, i The motion for the appointment of a select j committee, with the amendment, was then adopted.
