FUNERAL OF THE LATE MRS. ALFRED

BUCKLAND. One of the most numerously and respectably attended funerals of any that we have witnessed since tho very earliest days of the province has been that of Mrs. Alfred Buckland, which took place on Sunday. Not only is Mr. Buckland generally known and respected by his fellow settlers, but his deceased lady was almost as widely known and esteemed for her kindly qualities and goodness of heart. No better proof could have been given of the existence of this feeling than in the respect shown to her memory by the attendance of so large a concourse at the melancholy ceremony of yesterday, where old settlers from a considerable distance, leading merchants and business men from Auckland, were alike gathered.

The funeral cortege left Mr. Buckland's resi- I dence at Newmarket a few minutes after two o'clock for i«fc. Mark's cemetery. It was a melancholy sight to see tho bereaved husband, his eldest daughter hanging on his arm, and the younger children, following as chief mourners, while relations and friends of both sexes, and several carriages from Auckland, followed in the rear. The church of St. Mark was unable to hold one-third of those present. The Uev. Mr. Heywood read the burial service in a very impressive manner, and at the close of the service the Bev. A. G. Purchas, of Onehunga, gave forth the 100 th Psalm, leading the cxtemporo choir, the song of praise was taken up by those present, and ndded not a little to the solemnity of this most solemn ceremony.—July 16.
