GOVERNMENT PRIZE FIRING.

Ykstehday was tho third and concluding day for tho firing of the Auckland Militia and Volunteers. Those who fired yesterday represented tho best shots of the two previous days, t'.a object being the selection of two marksmen to be sent to Wellington to represent the Province in tlio contest for the colonial prizes. Tho weather was pretty well all that could bo desired and a very grent improvement on that of the previous day. Tho ranges fired at were 400, 500, and GOO yards, in compliance with tho regulations. As will bo perceived by the annexod score, the shooting was not nearly so good as on the previous days, which may bo partially accounted for, however, by tho fact of tho extondod range of 600 yards. Mr. T. Stewart and Mr. Brighton it will bo perceived wero the top scorers yesterday, and there is every probability that they will furnish our representatives at Wellington. There were only two absentees yesterday, and the whole proceedings passed oil'satisfactorily. Major Tighe, the AdjutantGoueral, was of course on tho ground to superintend the firing. Wo trust to bo able to furnish our readers to-morrow with a list of marksmen who have boon successful in gaining the district prizes. Whilst writing on this subject we may add that on the 10th February next there will bo some further firing ; Captain Hobbs having very generously presented a rifl.o for competition, whilst Captain Clarko will givo a revolver to be shot for on tho same day, in addition to two money prizes.
