The past week has been an exceedingly dull one as regards the shipping b"sinefs, there having been .'Only two arrivals of note—neither of those foreign— and the departures very limited. Our harbour is looking bare, and were it not for the presence of five men-o'-war. would be almost deserted, the only square-rigged vessels being the London ships Percy, Gala, and Btillarat, and the colonial trader Charlotte Andrews We may, however, soon expect to see the port looking lively again, as there are a number of not only foreign but colonial vessels due and overand may be looked for' at any hour. Their detention is no doubt owing to the continued prevalence of light winds and calms of late. \ The weather during the week has bpen fine, with \ >ery hot sultry winds, the thermometer standing on \Wednesday last at 100 ° . ■The arrivals were on Saturday last, H.M.S.S. Fal~VCaptain Parkyn, from Wellington, after a good SrHgo of six days undor canvas; and on Tuesday in bai2,^ enuß ' ® a P^ l ' n Kein, from Port Waikato, The latter vessel has come seeking, and 18 'TJt"" /T f re '"ht or charter. ne• ae),rtnres comprise on Saturday last the regular ir!iain c b T ,(r Captain Robertson, for Sydf 1 Ml ca go of nroduco and some 20 pas-1 f w' 8 '' , Tfillei monl, Captain Gillois, for K.S.W. bs , liwt '. f he w.z&.N. | * B "*rr e ' a ptain Pfemer, for the Southern I Tlnces * aad passengers, and the '

hrig Captain Riea, for Chili, in ballast. The last named vessel will load a cargo of breadatiiffs at Chili, and thon return to this port On Monday the barque Anne Melhuish, Captain Williams, sailed for Newcastle, N.S.W., with a small carzo of sawn timber, and several passengers; and on Tuesday the fine new schooner Donald McLean took lier maiden, trip for Napier. Larjro quantities of wool, produce, fro., have arrived during the week from tho const for shipment to England, and wj are glad to learn that the barque Ballavat and ship Percy are both likely to sail for London about the middle of next, month, full ships. We have now in harbour the »<hole fleet of men-of-war compusing the Australian squadron, viz., H.M.S.S. Curngoa, 21, Commodore Wiseman; 11.51 y.S. T'lsk, 21, Captain I.ure; H.M.S.S. Brisk, 21, Captain Hope; Ft.M.S.S. Falcon, 17, Captain Parkvn; and H.M.S.S Kelipse, 4, Captain Freemantle. During the week the crews of tho various ships have been exercising at gun practice, yard shifting, and other manoeuvres, and yesterday they went to g nernl quarter!) several rounds of blank cartridge being fired. Lasr. week we had to record the launch of a fine cons ting craft at tho North Shore, and thin week we paid a visit to most of the other ship building yards, both on this and the othor shore, and found some dozen fine craft in a forward state, and almost ready for launching. Mr Ni col, of the North Shore, has a fine schooner laid down to tho order of Sir. Kelly, of Sydney, to he ready in about two months. Mr. Boddoes lias, ulsx on the stocks, two cutters and a cargo boat. Messrs. Holmes, Brothers, a, £ne schooner; and Messrs. Sims and Brown, a cutter. In Auckland, Mr. Mcliav of Smalo's Point, has almost completed a fine topsail sehoonero' <53 feet keel, 17 feet beam, 6 feet 9 inches! depth of lnld, G2 feet ove all, and about 45 tons; she promises to be a. very handsomo craft, with large carrying capacity, and intended for the East Coast trade. Messrs. Henderson and Spraggon, Mr. Duthie, and Mr. Stone, have also several cutters building at their respective yards Intelligence has also beon received that two fine I'rafls are in course of formation ~t Maburaugi, one at Wnipu, and two at Wan«arei. Mr. Craig, of tho Wanirapea Paw Mills, has also building at the hands of Mr. Meiklej jhn, Omaha, a fine schooner, to bo about 50 tons register, and built of tho best mnter als. Sho is said to bo a very handsome model, and will be ready for launching about tho middle of next month. This speaks well for Auckland and its shipping interest. From Mongonui intelligence has been received th vt to barque Anne and Jane, Captain Smith, lias completed loading her carjjo of timber, and was to sail for an Eastern port on Wednesday last. The only vessels o:i the eve of departure aro the Ch'irlotto Andrews and Neva, the former for Guam, and the latter for tho fc'outh Sea Islands. ' ARRIVAL OF THE SYLPH. The regular Kuipnra trader Sylph, Captain Boult, arrived in Inrbour at a i early hour yestorday morning from that port, bunging a cargo of 32 tons kauri gum. She sailed on Saturday l:ist, rouudod the North (Jape on Monday, and had fine weather throughout. The only vessel sighted was a b ii» outward bound (supposed to be the Wit a) oil' Mongonui. Tho Sylull returns again to Kaipara with despatch. ARRIVAL OF THE WHITBY. The cutter Whitby, Ca 'tain Donsihty, arrived yesterday in ballist from Opotiki, which port sllO left on >unday night last, and had fine weather on the passage. She put into Mercury Bay on Wednesday si'ckinir, but tin re heing no cargo for her she only remained a few lv u-s. The Hope, schooner, was seen iroing intoTauranga at day .i>*ht on Tuesday last.. The Bella was sighted off ilcreury Bay, and the Huro and two other CUtteiS off Cape Colv.lle. Tho as. St. Hilda hal arrived at Opotiki from Wellington with stores.
