JAMES EDWARD FITZGERALD.
Ws have received the following note and enclosure from the member for Ellesmere. We do not know to what passage in the Cross Mr. Fitzgerald alludes, tut we know Ihat he has a happy knack of saying a ft thing in the House, and when sUerwaids taxed with faying it, OJ being perfectly oblivious of ever having used or intended to use any such expression. "We have more lhan once witnessed this occur. We would lather believe even the Ci o.wthan Mr. Fitzgerald. No cue has more slandeied the people of this province than Mr. Fitzgerald himself. No man deserves less consideration Trow them. Ko falsehood has been tco gross to resort to when it was desiied by him to lower Auckland citizens in the eyes of the •world. To the Editor of the Kew Zealand Hehaud. Mr. Fitzgerald will he greatly obliged if the Editor 6f the Hemaxl) will insert'the following letter to Sir Duncan Cameron in his paper to-monow morning. " House c f Eepresentutives, Dec. 9, 1864. " Sir,—l beg to enclose to you a paragraph which has appealed in the Southern Ctoss this morning, for the purpose of conveying to you and to the officers and men under your ctmmand ft distinct contradiction of the charge it contains—that I ever, by direction rr implication, accused Her Majesty's troops of cowardice, There is no pretence for such a statement.
" I Lad taken my parage in the ' Airedale' to-mor-row moinirg, but shall postpone my departure, to afford the opportunity of offering any further explanation which may be desired, and to take the necessary steps for pi osecuting the autliois of the libel. " With many apologies for trespassing on your attention, I have the honour to be, Sir, " Your most obedient humble servant, " James Ewtaiui Fitzgerald. " To Lieut.-General Sir Duncan, Cameron."
