George Campbell, Robert Miller, Peter Blake, Elizabeth Young, Ellen McDonnell and Bridget Condron, tlieir first offences,' were treated in the usual manner. T.MUEZZLKMF.NT. Georgo Law was brought up on remand, charged •with unlawfully appropriating to his own use and benefit the sum of £10 l-ls. 7d., the property ofher Majesty the Queen. < Mr; Merriman appeared for the prosecution, and applied for a further remand in order to obtain the attendance of necessary witnesses who were living at a considerable distance. The prisoner applied to bo furnished with the do-tes and otlier details of the charge against him. Case adjourned until this day week. ANOTHER CJIAJ- ■" or EItIIEZZLKIIENT FHOil GOVERNMENT. . Joseph stood charged with having embezzled fr —nil 6 camp at Drury, a quantity of corn, the propevty of the Government of Mew Zealand. Mr. M..rra:ian appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. Beveridge for the accused. , Mr. Merriman applied for a remand, stating that the witnesses liad not arrived from Wangurei, and that the case in the present state could not be proi eeeded with.
Mr. Beveridgc objected to take a remand, contending that there was no evidence whatever before the Court justifying a postponement. If the prisoner was remanded the eflect would be that lie would probably be imprisoned for three mouths, as the sessions of the Supreme Court commenced to-morrow. There was no information before the Court, and on those grounds only ti remand would be illegal. Mr. Merriman stated that the prisoner was remanded from Nelson, and that the Magistrate of that place had neglected to send up the information. he Bench remanded the prisoner, bail being a>owed in two sureties of £50 each.
