ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. PRINCE ALFRED, FROM SYDNEY. The LC/R.M. Company's s.s. Prince Alfred,, Captain Gordon Ponsooby, arrived in harbour shortly after noon yesterday, with tho English IVI-nil, after a fine passage of days 12 houra. tshe lett Sydney at 7 d*iu» on the 14-th instant, instead of 15th (her usual dtfte of Sailing), owing to the early arrival of the P. & O- C6mpfiny's ship liomtiav with the English Mail. She brings a large general cargo, &30,000 in Bpeciie, and *17 iinioligst whom are the Hon. Reader Colonel AYaddy, oOtli Regiment, Colonel lYevoi*, 14th Kcgiiueut, and Lieutenants Benson and Soholefield, of Miranda. The Prince Alfred experienced strong ■westerly "fc-'indsi up to 10 a.m. of the loth, when it freshenetl to a fresh pale, with much thunder and i'giUtiing and heavy ruin. At two p.m. of the same Hate, it was blowing a hard gale, witli a terrific sea running, tho sea at times making a clear breach over the ship ; at live p.m. a very heavy sea broko on board, the ship nt the time being under close-reefed topsails, which carried away the steering gear and smashed in the skylights. Hie helmsman had a narrow escape, only saving himself by being washed into the mizen rigging, to which he was fortunately able to cling, although severely stunnod and shaken. The ship was steered with relieving tackles, until such time as fresh steering apparatus could be extemporised. Great credit is due to the carpenter, Mr. Kntter, and Air. Mathews, chief engineer, for the expeditious manner in which this was effected, as the ship was in great jeopardy, scudding in such a heavy gale and sea as she was at the time. }Tine weather was experienced from the 17th; the Three Kings were passed on the 19th at 10 a.m., oil* which a brigantine was sighted steering E.; the North Cape was rounded the same day ; off Little Harrier sighted a ship standing to Southward, and in Oma liay a barque, apparently on shore, with mizen-topmast gone.

Tho wind then hauled to the Northward, and from the 11th up to the Kith experienced a series ot N. and N.N.E. winds, with fierce squalls. Sighted tho Thrco Kings on the ISth instant, and has since had fine weather.

The Bella Vista, brings two passengers, ami a largo cargo, consigned to Messrs. oolley A: Co. In Capt. Tonner we have to welcome back a very old acquaintance amongst us, he having been a regular trader here some years back in tho schooner Grafton and barquo General "Wool.

The Kate left Sydney for Auckland on the 14 th instant.

Very little freight was olfering in Sydney, trade being very depressed, if we except the coal trade which was nourishing, and the coal tonnage sought after. The weather had been very tine and settled on the Australian coast, and agricultural prospects were promising. Capt. Spain, Superintendent of Transport Department had failed to charter a ship suitable to carry sick and wounded troops to England, consequently he had proceeded to Melbourne to make enquiries at that port for such a vessel as is required. The brigantine Hercules, Capt. Kuwald, sailed from Newcastle for this port on the 10th inst , with 242 tons coals.
