CITY BOARD—Tuesday.
The usual weekly meeting of the City Board was heM yesterday altc-nieon, at their offices, Canada Buildings. Present: —The Chairman, (Mr. Beveridge), Messrs. Webster, Swanson, Ttiinbull, Slieehau, and Wripley. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and conlimied. The Chairman intimated that a letterhadboensent to the Secretary of the Gas Company, communicating the resolution of the Board, with regard to the state of the streets, A:c. Letters weie read from Mr. G. E. Elliott, on behalf oi the residents and tlie Wesleyan Congregation, n questing that some steps he taken by the lJO.'fd to put -Durham-strict into a thorough state of rej.au-. 'I his was ordered to he referred to the Slrects' Committee. Alto a letter from the inhabitants ui' Stanley -street, f.elilioniug that the Board would cause some steps to he taken to properly drain tiie street, the present one not being capable of carrying oii' the water, A:c. Some discu.-sion then arose as to w} ;L .t];ei" 11e. t was within llie jurisdicticn i»i tiie X>;i'ii, Mr. Webster being of opinion that only one side of it was within tiie limits. Tlie Chairman lead a letti i- li 0111 Mr. Morpeth, Inspector of Nuisances, lVc., as to the nuisanie of an open cesspool, which existed in Chancery-stieet, and suggesting that it should at once 1 e removed or cleansed. It was proposed and carried that the Hoard should issue an order lor its removal within 48 hours. ni!r.Y-STI!EIiT. It was proposed, by Mr. Webster and carried that the alterations, as shown in tiie specification, to bo done 111 Grey-street, should be postponed till a titter season of the year, Out as the w inter was now coining in, tiie street to Lie made temp urit'ly passable, and a cuivert loiuied to carry oil the water, lie thought it v,as a bad time of the year to cut up and form the road. Tenders were ordered to be adveitised for th.o work required to be done. CITY LEVELS. DEPOT FOR SOIL. The Chairman stated that, in reply to the address he sent to the Superintendent requesting that a depot of soil, might be granted for the deposit lie had been cubed upon by .Mr. Newman, who informed him that it was impossible for the Government to do so, but advised him to advertise for tenders from panics willing to provide a suitable place fur that purpose, and the Kxecutive would if necessary, pay part of the expenses. iJiscussion postponed till a luture day. Mr. Swauson- drew the attention of the Board to the bad state in which the Gas Company left the streets alter lav ing down their gas pipes. lie gave a notice ot motion for next meeting.
