WAIROA.

[FROM OVH OWN COJIKISPO^DDNT.] February 17,186*. Thk flying column started early on Suturdur inoming to examine the Huuuu ranges, mid returned to camp the same evening. They had reason for going tluit day, viz., on the previous night n light wns observed, stationary, at " Sky High," in the Hunua, which was believed to have originated from some rcminhig natives, and with this intention they started, and brought us word that they had come across the traces of natives, and had seen w hero they had been encamped the night before. They also said that they believed there had only beoii a email party, iind that they thought they wero scouts who were ranging about, nvciiig uli:it was going on through tho locality. Outlying settlers would do well to be still on their guard", as it i 3 diilicult to say when they might get a cull. The !h inj: column art- going out to-day, aud -will follow them up as far as possible. CorporaUTrott, tho man who fired at Mr. Robert M'Cullock (with intent to kill) some time ago, wad tried by the military authorities, at Papakura, about a mouth ago. He was found guilty, and was ordered into the guard-tent until tho following morning, when his sentence would be read in liis presence. However, during the course of the night, ho managed to make good his escape, unobserved, and has not eince been heard of. It is thought ho hns quitted the colony. I am sorry to state that a volunteer -was caught asleep on hia post, at the Galloway Bedoubt/ the other night, and is now awaiting a court martini. The poor fellow has but lately arrived in thin colony, and wa3 not very well acquainted with tho service aud rules. I trust the military authorities ivill deal leniently with him on this occasion.
