THE PANAMA ROUTE.

j From: .a private letter, received bv the last mail, we learn that .Mr. Crosbie Ward, of ; postal contract notoriety, has added another : to the list of extravagances for which he is i now so justly remarkable. We understand j that a part oi' his mission to England was to negociate a contract for a mail service via Panama, and that under special instructions from the (lovemmeni" of New Zealand the port of call in New Zealand was to be left to the contractors for the service. It was felt on all hands that so reasonable and fair a course would lead to the selection of the best and most suitable port for call in New I Zealand, but Mr. C'rosbie Ward, wiser than j the Government of which he formed a part, | and whose instructions he was certainly bound to earrv out, determined that the port of call should be '' some place in Cook's •Straits," and has accordingly advertised for a contract for the service from Panama, making Wellington the port of call. For the present we make no further comment on this extraordinary conduct.
