What the Movies are Doing.

Paramount —" On the Level." nnHE boom at the Paramount Thea- -™- tre continues and packed houses are the rule. Mary Pickford in /'The Little American," has had a particularly successful ■ run this week. For the new programme, which takes up the running to-morrow (Saturday), the management have another fine feature to spring upon, their patrons in "On the Level," a 'big Jesse L. Lasky production in which Fannie Ward plays the role of heroine. The story is an exciting one of the popular American cowboy brand. Merlin Warner is the only child of an old sheep ranchman and keeps house for him. The two are living very happily, though poor, until a raid, wherein her father is killed. Two years later, Merlin, renamed Mexicali Mae, a dance hall artist, is employed by Pete Sontag, who finds it more lucrative to smuggle opium under cover of running a saloon. Then on to the scene comes "Joe"—a remittance man, but withal a thorough gentleman, 'and a talented musician. Through her love of books and music Joe appeals to Mae as no else ever did, and she falls in love with him. Pete is engaged in a smuggling deal of importance. On hearing that one of his confederates has "double crossed" him, Pete shoots him and tries to place the blame on Joe's shoulders. The climax is startlingly dramatic. A strong sup-

porting cast includes Jack Dean, Harrison Ford, and Lottie Pickford. it • e ■ King's—" Indiscreet Corinne." Olive Thomas has a fascinating role to plaj' in "Indiscreet Corirtne," a new Triangle drama, starting at the King's to-morrow (Saturday). She is the daughter of society parents. She has plenty of money and friends, but she yearns for something different. With the aid of her French maid, Corinne, she gets herself into a whirl of trouble. She becomes a masked dancer at a fashionable restaurant and causes a New York sensation. The cabaret sets are altogether novel. The mystery is exceedingly clever and the solution is a breath-taking surprise. "The Neglected Wife" opens its third chapter, entitle "In the Crucible." * * # * Empress —"The Adventures of Carol." That most delightful child actress, Madge Evans, is the heroine of "The Adventures of Carol," the World film drama commencing at the Empress tomorrow. (Saturday). She is the daughter of a naval officer who is haunted by spies and he tells her never to reveal her name. When the little girl gets lost in New York, she sticks staunchly to her father's words and consequently encounters some startling adventures. She is takem in hand by an Italian organ grinder and is made to dance and do tricks along with "Garibaldi," an almost human little monkey. During a tour of the Southern States shemakes her escape and is adopted into a luxurious Southern home. There comes a great surprise for all concerned at the end. The supporting cast includes the handsome Kate Lester and special notice must be given to Carl Axzell,
