NEWS FROM THE FRONT.
Thebe were all sorts of rumours current yesterday —of fighting at Wairoa—of an action with Jackson’s Ranger’s, in which that leader was reported to have fallen. Happily there was no truth in either ; and we heartily rejoice to have it in our power to give unqualified contradiction to the reported death of Lieut. Butler, 65 th Regiment. That young officer, though severely wounded, is doing well, and may be expected in Auckland shortly. Captain Saltmarshe’s wound is by no means so serious as was at first apprehended. The poor boy Watson, shot through the stomach, is since dead. The loss sustained by the Maoris has been serious—more so than will, probably, ever be known.
