Commercial Record.

Nbw-Zealander Office, Friday, January 9th, 1863. The strong Westerly gales which have prevailed throughout the past week, have been the means of bringing in two of our long-expected English vessels—the Silver Eagle, in 103 days, and the Cairngorm in 119 days, bringing together an addition of 254 60uls to our population. The only Other foreign arrival was the schooner Emily, from Launceston, with a cargo of flour. The departures for foreign ports were tne barque Aim and Jane, with timber for Melbourne; schooner Coral Queen, for the South Sea Islands ; barque Constance, for Sydney, with 3867 bags wheat, part of her original cargo from California; and the American whaler Sea Gull, for New Bedford, with her cargo of oil, consisting of 1 BGO barrels. The trade with the Southern Provinces still continues active. We have had two arrivals during the week. The Albatross, from Otago via Napier, at which place she shipped a quantity of wool, for transhipment to the Ida Ziegler, loading for London, and also a quantity of grain for this market; the other arrival was the schooner Wild Wave, from Kaiapoi, wiih a large cargo of flour, wheat, maize, and other grain. The departures were five in number, viz :—Steamers Queen and Storm Bird, for all the Southern Settlements; schooner Excelsior, for Napier; cutter Kate, for Taranaki; and the schooner Heron, for Wanganui via Taranaki; all with large and general cargoes. The ketch Sea Shell, has shipped a full cargo of timber, and is expected to sail for Lyttelton on Tuesday next. The schooners Zillah and Sea Breeze are also fast loading for Napier. The quantity of produce received from the coast, during the week, amounts t0—582 bushels wheat, 1,400 bushels maize, 40 cwt. pork, $ cwt. lard, 1 cwt. butter, 100 dozen eggs. 1,250 lbs. honey, 40J cwt. onions, 10 bushels apples, 30 head cattle, 1 cow, 3 horses, 20 sheep, 9,4u0 lbs. wool, Bfi tons kauri gum, 4 tuns black oil, 10J tuns cocoa nut oil, 10,800 feet sawn timber, 48 spars, 800 feet house blocks, 137 tons firewood. During the past week numerous and extensive sales have taken place at the various auction marts. The attendance throughout was good, and the prices obtained most satisfactory. Mr. Alfred Buckland reports that his second Wool Sale for the season, held tt the Haymarket yesterday, was numerously attended, there being in addition to the usual buyers, several new-comers by the Silver Eagle and Cairngorm, who seemed to take great interest in the poceedings. The prices realized were in some instances higher than those obtained at the first sale. Wool in g»ease Drought frcm Bd. to 12* per lb. ; the greater portiod however, realized from 9d. to Hid. per lb.; washed wool fetched from Is. 2d. to Is. 6'd. per lb.; the bulk selling from Is. 4d. to Is sid per lb. The quantity offered amounted to 143 bales and 53 bags, the greater portion of which, we hear, is intended for shipment per Ida Ziegler for London. This vessel has already shipped a large quantity of wool, and will, we are given to uuderetand convey home the largest clip ever sent from this port in one bottom. The next wool eale is Messrs. Styak and Hunter's, which it advertized for the 14th instant, when from 40 to 50 bales will be offered. AUCKLAND STOCK AND SHARE MARKET. Auckland Stock Exchange. The chief feature this week connected with the Gold Mining Associations, h:is been the working of Keven's machinery and its results. The public gener Uy as well as the Shareholders in : particular, have been waiting with considerable anxiety to I ascertain the value of the auriferous product of the quart! [ of (!i? Kapapga ra«ee of hills, Hltrterto owlpj to

some slight defect with the ripple boxe«, that anxiety hai not been satisfied to its fullest extent. Doubtless the Directors of the C-aiC* n y w '" take tne necessar y ,tP P s t0 haTe ,ome of the t«!ling»T-°P er 'y tested, in order to ascertain if any, and if so, what quantity of gold has escaped through the amalgamating process. Until that be done, and the results made known, there will exist a degree of doubt over the late operations, which the actual character of the facts may not merit. On my recent visit to Coromandel, I obtained a small sample of iliiies, which Mr. C. Lysnar has just tested. In 8 ounces of quartz tailing' he obtained 3$ grains troy of equivalent to 32 ounce*, 13 dwt., 8 grains of gold per ton, which, at its carat value of £3 Is. per ounce, would amount to £99 18s. These aud other similar results which 1 have met with, make it advisable that the proper means should be adopted to secure the gold which at present is lost to the diggers. The Shares of the New Zealand Insurance have considernbly advanced in value; they may now be quoted at £6 premium. I have been informed that the Directors will, at the forthcoming half yearly meeting, advise the proprietors to declares dividend out of the realized profits, of 20 per cent, per annum.
