Correspondence.
To the Editor of the Nkw-Zkalander
Sir, —Although only in this country a few years, and not troubling my brains about politics, I cannot help feeling amused at the arguments used against the late Superintendent, Mr. Williamson. One of the grave charges is, that he does not spend enough of the colonial money on the settlements. The fact is, they want what we should be charged in England, with a local fax or taxes, the whole colony to pay. Ido not know what some of them would say to have the collector calling one day for a highway rate, another day « paving rate, then a gas rale for lighting the street lamps, then a church rate, then a demand for tithes, then a'police and comity rate, and four times a year for a poor rate—all which, every one who is'earning only 10s. to 12s. per week who has a house rated to the poor rate at £G per year, must pay, or be summoned to tbe Bench for the amount and expanses ; what would they say, if they receive X2 or above, having to pay for a receipt stamp, also to pay duty for keeping a horse, and if they kept a boy to look after it, to pay duty for a livery servant; likewise turnpikes, income and property tax, house tax, &c., from all of which in this colony they are free. I am, Tours, &c., A Burros.
