RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Tuesday, Octoueu 22nd,
Robert Scott was charged with neglecting to return his arms at the expiration of his term. L cut.-Col. Balncavis said that when the time expired, he had ahowed a month for bringing them hack, at the end of which lie sent repeated messages to Defendant, and afterwards a summons: at last Defendant sent the arras. lie offered to let him off if he paid for the summons, which he promised to do, but never did. lie (Lt.-Col. B.) did not now sue for the penalty (-£10,) but the costs. Defcmlcnt said he only received one message which was on Friday week, and on the following Thursday he received a summons. He next day sent up the arms.
The charge not being pressed, the Magistrate imposed a nominal line of Is. and costs. Defendant: “I consider it an imposition and with all respect to your worship, you may put in a distress for it, for I wont pay a farthing.” Bridget Weston was charged with threatening and using abusive language to John Howell, shoemaker, Queen-street. Prosecutor declined to say that he was afraid of being assaulted, and Defendcnt was therefote discharged with a caution, and ordered to pay the costs. A women found dmnk a fifth time within 3 months, was sent to gaol for 9 days, Wednesday, Octoiier 23rd. Bobcrt Spowert, remanded on Monday last, was further remanded till Friday. William L’Estrange was charged with stealing a work-box, the property of John Havill, Victoriastrcct. On Saturday evening last, there was a work-box on a table in Havilie’s front room, which on Sunday morning was gone. The window (which had not been fastened) was found a little way np. Ai Monday, the prisoner sold to Mr. G. Hampshire, hair-dresser, Qneen-strect, a pair of brass handled scissors, which were identified by Mr. Havill as having been in the stolen work-box. On Tuesday, Sergeant Major Simms searched prisoner’s house and found in a trunk a work-box identified by Havill sis the one stolen. The prisoner was sentenced to 4 months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Two men were each fined ss. and costs for being drunk. Friday, Octoueu 25tii. LARCENY. Robert Spowert, remanded on Monday last, was found guilty of stealing three hams from Mr. llavill’s smoke-house in Victoria-street, and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
