LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. TUESDAY, JULY 9, 18G1. Present:—The Speaker, Major Richmond PR Messrs. Watts Russell, Cutficld, and the General. Mr. TANCRED said the House of Rcpresentatiw. having adjourned until Friday, in order for their a* cessors to office to form their arrangements, he wonJH move that this Council do also adjourn until Fri<u Council adjourned accordingly. v_ FRIDAY, JULY U, 1861. Present: —The Speaker, Messrs. Whitaker Tancn*? Baillie, Watts Russell, Colonel Russall, Johnst-* Major Kichmond. G. 8., Lieut.-Col. Kennv Mr. WHITAKER (at the foot of the* table) «,. and said that he and the other members of the We Ministry having resigned, he had only now to state that he had received no official intimation of who were their successors, or who wad to represent them in this Com, cil; he had vacated his scat at the other -end of ftp table for that gentleman, whoever he might be, and he hoped they would shortly sec him among them. Major KICHMOND brought up the Report of the Standing Orders Committee, and gave notice of motioi for its adoption on the 15th instant. Colonel KENNY asked Mr. WIIITAKEU and & SPEAKER, whether there had been, or was likely to be, tiny official means of communication with the other Chamber. Neither gentleman being aware of such, on the motion of Col. KENNY, Council adjourned till Mon- "■* day. MONDAY, JULY 15, 1861. Present:—The Speaker, Messrs Outfield. Johnston, Watts Russell, Baillie, Tancred. Whitaker, Swainscm! Major Kichmond,C.B., Lieut. Col. Kennv, and Col Russell. Mr. JOHNSTON rose and paid, that hr. had been requested by Mr. Fox to slate that be had not as yet been ab'e to make arrangements for a gentleman to represent the Government in this Council, but that he hoped in a few hours to do so, and that by next sitting day be believed such an arrangement would be com. pleted. After this statement, Council adjourned. TUESDAY, JULY 16, 1861. Present : - The Speaker, Messrs. Tancred, Salmon, Baillie, Watts Russell. Whitaker, Johnston. Gilfilbm, Cutfiebl, Swainson, Col. Kusscll, Lieut. Co!. Kennv, Major Kichmond, C.8.. and Dr. Pollen. Mr. SWAINSON introduced Dr. Pollen to the Speaker as a member of Council. The Clerk having read the order of appointment, and Dr POLLEN having subscribed the oath and taken his seat, said that His Excellency the Governor haiing done him the honour to summon him to that Council and also to appoint hia to a seat in the Executive, he (Dr. P.) appeared there as a member of the lately formed Responsible Ministry, but without office. The hon. member then at some length entered into a statement of the policy intended to be pursued by the new Government. Mr. W r HITAKER rose to ask if he were correct in understanding that his hon. friend had stated it to be the intention of the Government to hold a free con- < ference to be presided over by the Native Minister, the j Colonial Secretary, and other Members of the Ministry ! on the one part, and the Native Chi fs of Waikato on the other. Dr. POLLEN replied, that his hon. friend had greatly amplified and altered the sense of what bid been said ; the observations had reference to the removal of misunderstanding on the part of the Natives, by personal communication on the part of one or more of the ministers with the Native Chiefs. Mr. SWAINSOX said, that on occasions snehu the present it was not usual to have any discussion, but ' aving presented Dr. Pollen to this Council, he might be permitted to assure him that as the exponent of the measures of Government, he would meet with every conrtesy and attention from this Council. Majwr RICHMOND moved, That the Report of the Standing Orders Committee on t,';c Standing Bute and Orders of the Council, be adopted. Mr. SWAINSON moved in amendment, that the Report be commuted. Amendment carried, and Report committed accordingly, reported with amendments, adopted, and ordered to be transmitted to the Governor for his assent. ORDER OF THE DAY. On The morion of Dr. POLLEN", the Measures Ordinance Amendment Bill was read a second time, committed, reported without amendment, an<t ordered to be read a third time next sitting day. Council adjourned at half-past three.
