GREAT FIRES IN LIVERPOOL.
(From Bell's Messenger, July 18.) "We regret to learn that .this impoitant town lias been within the last two days the scene of two destructive fires, involving the loss of an immense amount of valuable property. A lettf-r , 'from the spot dated yesterday afternoon, contains tfiVfollowitfg particulars:— " Liverpool within the last few hours has been \isitedVith two melancholy disasters— Ogden's 'iron found ryVSefloh -street, near "the Brunswick -Do&£[.'Veing (he scene of one; the ma«sive pile of building known as the Apothecaries' Hull, that of the other.- This laiter,it vr ill be remembered, shflereda's'imilar misfortune a few months ago. "The fire in Seflo'n-street broke out at ten minutes to nine last night, and burned withintensefury. l£ight engines were brought to bear upon it as speedily as possible, and by midnight the destructive element was subdued, having been confided "to the three stories from the top. The damage, as we hastily gather, is estimated at j£4ooo. The' insurances were £1000 in the Royal j in the Phoenix, £1250. •• The'second and most destructive fire occurred at' ah early hour this morning with great siiddentiess, leing discovered about a quarter •before two. The fire when discovered, had al"ieady attained to an alarming height, and made rapid progress, aided by the chemical preparations stored in the rooms. Several explosions took place, one of which burst open the gales at the back part of the buildings ; and the scene was grand and impressive in the extreme. For ( "some time fears for the safety of the closely surrounding buildings were entertained*, at the, back, the extensive laboratory, the scene of the former fire, and separated from the main building by a nan ow street, caught fire. The danger, however, was quickly subdued:* ' The backs of the several houses in Bold-street also cangbt j but thesei with the premises adjoining the hall on the we6t, for a considerable time endangered, were happily preserved. The damage is estimated at a very large sum. The following is furnished to us as an estimate of the insurance ; Koyal, £5500 j Manchester, £6000 j West of England, £6000 j Phoenix, £6000."
