SYDNEY.
By the Lady Leigh, which arrived from Sydney on Wednesday evening, we have received newspapers to the Bth August. The Lady Leigh left on the 10th, and on the 9th the Graham had arrived from England, with the mail of the Ist April., "The Terror was to,teavrSydn«y wtwtror three days after the Lady Leigh; therefore an English mail may be expeited by her. Ihe news from New Zealand had excited the greatest interest in Sydney, and it appears to be the general wish that every soldier that can be spared should be sent to pnnish the native rebels. It is very curious and inconsistent, that in the Sydney papers, there are published three despatches, dated 11th, 12th, and 16th July, from Colonel Despard to Governor Fitzroy, detailing his proceedings after the evacuation of the pah by Heke and the natives. In our next number, we shall publish them, in order that the settlers here shall be in possession of facts, they ought to have known long since. At Sydney, affairs seem very prosperous. The Legislative Council was opened on the 29th July, by Sir George Gipps, who in his speech announced, the gratifying extraordinary fact, that — " in the year 1844. for the first time in the history of N. S. Wales, the exports of the colony exceeded the imports." There is every reason to believe that a Company for the smelting of Copper Ore is about to be established in" Sydney, which will be of incalculable benefit to this Colony. Two hundred men of the 53th Regt. were preparing to embark for New Zealand. Wheat has realized 5 shillings per bushel. The Lady Leigh has brought r,150 bags of flour, and a vessej is coming from HobartTown with a cargo of flour.
