NELSON. [From the Nelson Examiner.]
Militia. —We understand that Dr. Monro has accepted the junior captaincy in the Nelson battalion of militia, offered in the first instance to Mr. Fox, and declined by that gentleman. As the Government representative is yet unprovided with means to defray the expenses of the force he has been instructed to embody, we are still without the shadow of protective force, and for the present appear likely to remain so. As the Bandicoot schooner, laden with timber for Hobart Town, was leaving the harbour on Tuesday last, she drifted unto a ledge of the rock on which the Fifeshire formerly struck. She received but very slight damage in her bottom, which is now undergoing repair. Harvest Home. —On Friday, the 20th of June, G. Duppa, Esq., of Allington, Waimea East, entertained the whole of his workpeople (amounting to about 50 persons) in the genuine old English style. A large barn was fitted up for the occasion, and a supper provided which a London alderman might have rejoiced over. It is Mr. Duppa's intention, we are informed, to give his workpeople a similar entertainment every six months.
