BA&LY BETIBEMENT or HON. 1 'A, & HERDMAN. s MR D.'H. GUTHRIE LIKELY TO JOIN MINISTRY. WELLINGTON, November IB.' The Next change ihat may be e*. pected in the Cabinet is the resignation, of the Hon. A. L. Ilerdman, who "is to take the seat on the Supreme Court Bench to be vacated through the retirement of Sir John Dcnniston. It is prohble that Mr ilerdman will take his seat on the Bench as soon as possible after the legal, vacation, at Christmas time, which ends at the end of January. There is no doubt as to who Mr Herdmau's successor in the Cabinet will be. The only candidate in the running is Mr D. H. Guthrie. As Mr Guthrie is not'a (lawyer, ho would not be able to 'Me'over'Mr Herdman's portfolios, At present Mr Iterdman is Attorney-Gen-eral, Minister in Charge of the Crown Law Office, Minister in Charge of Folice, and Minister in Charge of. the Discharged' Soldiers' Information Department.. The Attorney-Generalship will go to Sir Francis Bell almost as a. matter of course, and he will also take over control of the Crown Law Office. Mr Hanan will take over control of the police. Mr Guthrie will take the discharged soldiers under his wing. The Department is not n large one yet, but it will increase in importance enormously after the war. He may also be given some of Mr Massey's many portfolios,'
