OVA FOR WEST COAST RIVERS.
OIIRISTCIIIJRCII, July 21
The Marine Department's policy of stocking New Zealand rivers with quia-, nat Salmon soon will be further advanced. Mr L. V. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, was in Christchureh yesterday ananging for half a million ova from the State hatchery at Ilakaiarainca, near Oainaru, to be liberated in the Hokitika river, in the Kokotnhi and the Styx, two tributaries, and in Lake Kanicri, a few miles from Hokitika town,
This season ],;m0,000 ova were collected at Hakatarniuea, Of these, half a million each will be liberated in the Hokitika and its tributaries, the Wairau, '.Marlborough, and the M.olyneaux, 'Otago, A report has been received that a quinnat salmon was caught in the Arnold River, in the Grey district, and a specimen in the Teremakau, another West Coast river. The report has not been confirmed, but, in view of the fact that the fish has spread from the Waitaki, near Oamani, to the Rangitata, South Canterbury, Mr Ayson thinks that it is possible that the report is correct.
He is a quinnat salmon enthusiast. It was on his recommendation that the species was imported to New Zealand from Canada, and he is looking forward to the time when it will be offered for sale in public markets. As it is hardier than the English salmon, he thinks that this might eomu about ibefore long.
