ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL,
The monthly meeting of the council of the AVaitaki Acclimatisation Society was held last night. The president, Mr C. 11. Swinard, occupied the chair, and there were, present: Messrs J. McPhail, Walter' Snmptciy W. Dowar, G. Drummond, W. Duncan, J. Mitchell, E, Farr, W, E, Budd, and tho secretary.. It was decided, on (he motion of Mr J. McPliail, that tho Ashburton Society be informed, in reply to their inquiry, that tlie' order for brown trout is being placed with the Government, as usual. \'
Mr Mitchell moved, and it was carried, that an order for 50,000 brown trout be placed with the Government.
The Southland- Society wrote offering to. supply opossums at 10s each, free on rail, at AVakapatu.' It was decided, on the motion of Mr Sumptcr, to reply that the time was not suitable for incurring such expense. A Gazette notice was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs making, it illegal to kill native game on Lake Ohau, and in the town of Odmaru. An inquiry for quail from the Hawkc's Bay Society was referred to the Otago Society. The Minister for Internal Affairs wrote granting permission to cull deer on the. Society's forests, and Mr Chas. Robertson, of Omaraina, was authorised to undertake culling operations. The Under-Secretary of Lands and Survey notified the Society that an Ordcr-in-Coiincil had been issued constituting the, AVaitaki Society a special board for controlling and managing reserves at Geniniell's crossing and Steward Settlement, for the purpose of camping grounds for fishermen and other persons. '
Copies of a new regulation were received, which provided that; "No acclimatisation society shall, during the close season, take any trout for the purpose of pisciculture from the waters of anys river or stream within the boundaries of any other acclimatisation district, without the consent of the acclimatisation society from within whose rivers or streams it is proposed to take trout being first obtained in writing," The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded copies of regulations for deer shooting and culling. The application of the Society for a portion of Crown lands for a fishing reserve on the Waltaki river in place of the one washed away was leported to be under the consideration of the Land Board.
It was moved, seconded, and carried, that the Society secure permission from the Minister of Internal Affairs to sell meat and deer skins for patriotic purposes. Reference to the minutes of the last conference showed that head money 'was to be paid out for black shags destroyed, No such payment, however, was to be made for grey shags,
The president, vice-president, and secretary were appointed to draw up the report and balance-sheet,
Accounts amounting to £6 17s Gd were passed for payment.
