PRICE OF BUTTER.

SUGGESTED INCREASE'"Oi!I'jt)SM). '(Por Press 'Association.)' '■ .WELLINGTON, -October (i. iThe.proposed Jnirease in the price of butter was discussed at a meeting of the Wellington Trades Council last evening, and a strong protest was made against the rise in the retail cost of this New Zealand product, The council decided to draw the attention of the Government to the promise, given by Mr Massey in. 1915 that if the price of butter fose above Is 7(1 per lb, (retail) export would be prohibited. No announcement of the inteitnons of the Government, with regard to the proposed increase in the price of butter has yet beeil made. The Board of i Trade has considered the matter, anil has made a, recommendation, which is understood to be against the' increase of 2d per lb, being allowed, The members of the' board ore of opinion that the local price should be kept down to its present level by the use of the power possessed by the Government to prohibit export, This may involve some, adjustment among the exporters in order that the loss representedl by the difference between the export price f.o.b, and the local wholesale price may be distributed fairly among the producing factories. The matter will be considered by the Cabinet.
