HIGHER SHIPPING FREIGHTS

I'ROTKST BY FARMERS.

(Per Press Association )

J'ALMfiRSTOX X., October 3.

The Wellington Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union passed the following resolution: "This meeting emphatically protests against Hie unwarranted rise in freights on wool, produce, etc. The monopoly in shipping matters is a serious menace to the producer. Although the farmers are much against Government interference in commercial matters, if such extortion is maintained the producers must either urge the Government to deal with the matter or promote a new shipping company, and guarantee to ship wool, produce, etc, only by such company's steamers,"

GOVERNMENT ACTION URGED,

WAXGANUI, October 5.

Mr G. V. Pearce, member for Patea, has wired to the Hon. James Allen: "No doubt you noted the disgraceful grab by the shipping monopoly of a penny per pound on wool, meaning £1,000,000 to the sheep farmers of New Zealand. Would urge the Government buying or chartering ships to break down monopoly, as wool can easily be held in New Zealand for some time."
