The local amutcur dramatic society was giving its usual Boxing Day performance, and the heavy man had (o enact tho part of a fugitive from justice. He had concealed himself beneath a table in n cottage to evade the police. Hut the table was short, while the legs of 'the heavy man were long, ami, therefore, they projected considerably. The pursuing , party rushed in ; leader, indeed, rushed a little too much, for he sprawled over those projecting legs. Still, it takes a good deal to put an amateur actor off his lines, and the commander of the gallant hand picked himself up and rubbed his shins'slowly.

"Ha, ha !" he cried in true Irvingoscpic style, "the villian Ims eluded us once more!".
