A certain lady, noted for her kind l heart and open hand, jvas approached not long ago by a man who, with tragic air, began : , "A man, madam, is often forced by hunger to do many things from whfch his very soul shrinks—and so it is with me at this moment. Unless, madam, in the name of pity ycyi give me assistance, 1 shall be compelled to do something which I have never before done, and which I should bo,sorry indeed to do." Much.touched by his manner, the lady gave him half a crown. As the man pocketed it with profuse thanks, she inquired: "And what is the dreadful thing I have kept you from doing, my poor man ?"
"Work," was (he brief reply, as the relieved man made haste to depart otherwhere.
