RAM AND EWE FAIR AT PETONE.

At the ram and ewe fair at Fetone only about f>oo rams were offered, as against 1200 last year. The list comprised 300 Ronmeys, 150 Lincolns, liiO English and Border Leicesters, and a few Shropshire?. The rams were very good, taken altogether, especially some lots from CUmaru, sent by Mr Reid, the Hon. Mathew Holmes, and Mr Menlove. There wa.s very fair inquiry, but buyers were not disposed to pay high prices, and therefore the sale was a dragging one. The auctioneers were the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Messrs A. G Tame and Co., and Mr GH. Sciles. Of the lots passed in, a largo number were disposed of privately; The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report: We quitted the following lots— On account of the Hon. M. Holmes : 20 Lincoln rams, 2^gs each, F. M. Foster ; seven Lincoln's, 2£gs, Gorrie. On account of P. C. Threlkeld: Five 2 tooth English Leicester rams, 2^gs, Grace Bros. On account of John Reid, Elderslie : One stud Roniney Marsh ram, sgg, Field (Ohariu) ; six flock Romneys, 2gs, Larsen ; 15 ilock Romneys, 2gs, Abbott Bros. ; 10 flock Romneys, 2]gs, Kilminster ; four Border Leicesters, 2}gs, Brown ; three Bonier Leicesters, 2^gs, Wilton. On account of Mr E. Menlove : 20 English Leicester rams, 2]gs, Shannon. A good many private sales were effected, and Ase quirted the whole of our catalogue privately. Messrs A. G. Tame and Co. report : The entry was a very small one as compared with last year, about 600 vi all being entered. Romneys were neglected, the demand being principally for Lincoln and English Leictsters. Stud Romneys brought up to 6 guineas, flock Romneys from 1 to 2k guineas ; a large number being turned out unsold. Stud Lincolns sold from 3 to 8 guineas, and good flock Lincolns from Ik to 2\ guineas ; English Lincoln rams bringing a shade less. Down sheep were poorly represented. The sale on the whole was a very dragging one, the low prices ruling for sheep no doubt being the chief cause ; and alt.o the feeling that the sale was being held rather early in the season, but this is difficult to avoid, owing to the large number of sheep fairs coming on. — New Zealand Times.
