THE ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— The nighb Mr T. Y. Duncan was lecturing afc Weston, there was a petition signed to have Cave Valley school re* moved into Weston, the mosb selfish thing I ever heard of. Half of the school was only built about 12 months ago, the playground enlarged, a piece of land taken from the reserve fer the Trustees, use, and everything aboub the place pub m order. Weston children have only aboub fcbreequarters of a mile to oome to school on a first-class road. The school disbricb extends to the upper Waiareka road adjoining the Kakanai river, children from that direction have 4J miles to come to school on very bad roads. To remove the school about a mile furtheraway is simply ridiculous. The thing thab gets over me is thafc the prohibitionists have signed their names to have the school removed from its present 1 stand into the township alongside two publichouses. Whore does their principle come m ? I know both fche hotelkeepers, and fchey are jusb as good as any of bhe people living m the districb. I am now going to give Oamaru prohihi* tionists a turn, ©oe of the Rev. Mr Dewdney's clan was lecturing m Oamaru some time ago. He said publicans and their wives should be denied membership of the churches. I went to the hospital last Tharsday to see a friend who gob hia thigh broken. I had only been there aboub bhree minutes when m came a Dublican's wife. I said to the poor fellow I was talking to : •* Does Mrs often come here 1" " Oh, yes she often comes. She is a kind, motherly woman. Look ab somo of the poor fellows' faces. How they are brightening up afc seeing her come into bhe ward." I want any pro-* hibibion minister to answer me this question : " Would nob thafc woman ba a credib bo any church m Oamaru ?"— I am, etc., Waiareka,
