A QUARREL BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL MEN. (BY TELEGRAPH). Christchurch, December 24.
At the Police Court this morning, Dr De Renzi, T. D. Harman (solicitor), Richard Brown (bone-setter), and Alfred Reynolds (hairdresser) were charged with assaulting Richard D. Thomas, solicitor. In his opening statement, counsel for the prosecution said that on the 19th instant Mr Thomas received a telephone message to attend Mr Harman's office. He went round and found the defendants there. Dr De Renzie said he wanted to ask Mr Thomas what had been said about him at a meeting of the Hospital Board. Mr Thomas declined to give the information, and turned to leave the office. Dr De Renzi then said : "No you don't ; you said I ought to be prosecuted ; put up your hands. " Mr Thomas replied that he had a weak heart, and was physically unfit to combat. Mr Harman did not interfere. Dr De Renzie then pulled up his shirt sleeves, struck Mr Thomas in the face, and knocked him against the window, Mr Thomas then got out of the room. A letter was received from Mr Harman stating that he was no party to the fracas. It all happened so suddenly that he could not interfere. Reynolds was asked by Brown to go to Mr Harman's office to witness a signature. Evidence was then taken.
