ESCAPE OF A PRISONER AT MARTON. (BY TBLEGRAPH.) Wanganui, February 28.
A prisoner named Thomas Johnson, who was waiting trial for forgery at Mar ton, •scaped from gaol this morning at 9.20. He had been working in the carpenters' shop with a fellow prisoner, but was left by himself for a few minutes, locked in by the gaoler. The ocher prisoner working in the gaol saw Johnson making his escape, and, after some delay, gave word to the gaoler, who at once rushed out after him, but Johnson had a good start and was out of sight, and the gaoler, being by himself, had to rely on the telephone for aid. Within 15 minutes the police were on his track, and, as he has since been seen, it is expected that he will be caught very soon.
