THE AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYED. INTERVIEWING AN EDITOR. (BY TELEGRAPH. ) Auckland, August 24.
At a mnss meeting of tho unemplojed, Measrs Peacock, Thompson, and Mobs, M.H.R., delivered addresses. A vote of consnre nas passed on Mr Peacock for hia inaction about the unemployed in assembly, and a vote of thanks to Messrs Thompson and Mobs for the steps taken by them was carried. Owing to the Bell having denounced a nnmberof unemployed at a mass meeting as loafers, who did not work and would not work, at the close of the meeting to-day a deputation w»a appointed, consisting of Messrs Farnell (ehairraan of the unemployed), Baltay, and Pennie, to interview Mr G. M. Read, the editor of the Bell, and demand that an apology be printed. A crowd followed the deputation, but on reaching the Bell office found Superintendent Thompson, who had got wind of the affair, and a detachment of police on the g.ound. Mr Thompson informed the crowd they could not go in, but two or three might to represent their sentiments. The editor threatened to eject one of the deputationiats for strong language, and refused to apologise for the article or retract.
