Shortly after two o'clock this afttrnoon a platelayer named John Lswis, working on tbe Rangiora sad Fernside seotioa of the line, fell from a trolly going at the rate of four or iivs miles an hour. The wheels inflicted injuries to his leg and side, the extent not being yet known. Ha also received a severe blow on the head.
Major Cautley, with Colonel Lean and several other gsntlemen, inspected the defence works at Lyttelton to-day. The permanent artillery force were exercised in working 8ome«of the big guns that are in position, and showed great omartnese in their work. Notwithstanding the expedition with which the work has been pushed forward, the defence worki are by no means complete.
The Hon. Colonel Whitmore arrived at Lyttelton to-day by the Te Anau.
