DUNEDIN. April 17.
At the Oiril Sittings of the Supreme Oourt to-day, the jury returned a verdict of LlOO damnges in the case Bathgato and Turnbull v. Proudfoot. Scott'a road engine started to travel by the main road to Christchurch on Saturday, and got over the big hill to Blueikin all right, bat tho driving wheel cracked there, owing to rubber tires not bein^ procurable. David Halloy, miner, of the Dunstan district, was killed bv a fall of earth in his claim on Saturday ; and a minei named James Kelly, at Blue Spur, wat also billed in the same way. At the Police Oourt to day a oaie of cittle stealing occupied attention. John Howitt, settler, was charged with being unlawfully in the possession of certair hides, the property of the N.Z. and A.L. Company. The company's Olydevalr estate is »itua f od near the Blue Mountains, on which their cattle run, and it it alleged accused thot tho catile in order to sell the hides. Detectives found pack ages of hides, consigned from accused to Dunedin, taken at tho railway, bearing tho company's brand. Further hearing was adjourned.
