CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

A moderately attended meeting of directors of the Oamaru Caledonian Society was held last evening to consider the question of establishing bursaries in connection with the Society, and of discussing the practicability of obtaining a ground freehold. MrD. Sutherland, the President, occupied the chair. It was determined that the first prize in the youths' walking match should be paid to the second competitor, if Fraser, who came in first, did not prove his age within the specified time. A letter was read from the secretary to the hospital committee intimating that in consequence of the handsome Bum — L3l 10s — handed to the institution by the society, it had been decided that a member of the society should have conferred upon him the privilege of being a Life Governor of the Hospital. On the motion of Mr Humphrey, Mr Fleming was selected as the gentleman whom the society recommended for the honor. The Chairman intimated that the next business for consideration was that of bursaries. The committee's report on this subject (already published in these columns) was read by the Secretary. The Chairman said the recommendation j was that there should be three bursaries, one this year at L3O, one next year at L6O, and another in three years, which would bring the amount up to L9O. Mr Miller thought if they made the bursaries for a number of years they would have to make provision for the full time, as any succeeding directorate would not be bound by what they did. They ] would certainly have to establish a bursary of some kind because they had pledged themselves to do so to the public, and had obtained support on that consideration. The Chairman : There can be no doubt that our successors will uphold what we do. Mr Humphrey thought that to commence with L.3Q would bo going beyond their funds. The Chairman was of opinion that { they should start it for one year, and at the end of that time they would be in a better position to judge whether it should be made an annual affair. If j they established the bursaries there was no fear of subsequent directors repudiating their claims. Mr Fleming thought the real intention of the committee was that an annual bursaiy should be established. They should have one to commence this year, j\ second next year, and a third the following year. He had looked carefully over I the accounts and found that they had a balance in hand of L 139 18s, of which about LllO was cleared this year. Mr Humphrey moved the adoption of clause 1 in the report—" That bursaries be established in connection with the Association to be called the Qamaru Caledonian Society bursaries." Mr Fleming seconded the motion, which was adopted. Mr Humphrey moved the adoption of Clause 2—" That the bursaries be three in number, first to commence in 1881 second in 1883, third in 1883, tenable for three years ; that they shall be open to all boys or girls fifteen years or under, in the Waitaki county, whose parents or guardians reside therein." Mr Mainland seconded the motion, which was carried. The other clauses, which related to the mode and subjects of examination, wero adopted as a whole. Mr Humphrey proposed that the amount of the bursary be L2O, and Mr Fleming proposed as an amendment that it be L 25. The motion was carriedMr Fleming proposed, " That a special meeting of the members of the society bo held on the 16fch February, to alter its constitution so that half only retire annually, The motion was seoonded by Mr Rule and carried. Mr Fleming moved, " That the president, vice-president, Messrs Mainland, Aitken, Humphrey, and the mover be appointed a sub-committee to make arrangements for carrying out the bursary question, and that the secretary be convener." Seconded by Mr Hook, and carried. The question of purchasing a. piece of ground was discusßed, and postponed for further consideration, the meeting terminating with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
