DUNEDIN. January 21.
The Presbyterian Synod last night carried the Rev. Mr Mackies resolution of woloome to Pastor Chiniqny, but in a slightly modified form, the modification absolving the Synod from any commendation of his object, which is said to be raising funds for a priostV college in Montreal; but regarding which tho Synod had not sufficiently definite information. The United Fire Brigado Association banquet last night was very successful. The annual soision came to a conclusion to-day, after a draft bill for presentation to Parliament was adopted. Oolonel Scratchley will arrivo on Friday, and Colonel Staveley has been re* quested to havo tho Volunteer* ready for inspection. In tho Supremo Court, in tho case re D. Calder's will, tho jury, aftor five minutes' deliberation, awarded the issues in favor of plaintiff}, doclaring that tostator was of sound mind necessary to undertaking when ho made the will, and that no coercion had boon used,
