CHRISTCHURCH. April 2.
A man named Harrison went duck shooting yesterday with a rusty gun, and blew hw left hand off. Schwartz's trial for arson comes on tomorrow, and is expected to last all day. There are 16 witnesses to be examined. Mr Qarrick appears for the Insurance Companies, and Mr. Joynt tor the accused.* This morning, just before 12 o'olock, the stables and coach-house attached to Mr Recce's house, Sydenham,' were burned down. The Christchnrch Brigade went down with a steam engine and saved the dwelling house. The stables were insured for L3OQ. A buggy and some harness was all that was saved. It is supposed that one of Mr Recce's sons, a little boy six years old, caused the fire, as his father found a match on him, and he was the first who saw the fire, and alarmed the servant girl by his cries. This is the eighteenth fire in or near Christchurch in less than six weeks.
