PRESENTATION TO MESSRS HISLOP AND SHRIMSKI, M.H.R.'S

At the dose of th« meeting of elector*, at the Kakanui Atheonum last night, Messrs HUlop and Shrimski were each presented with a very handaome silver salver, weighing upwards of 60 ounces each, having engraved on the centre an i ascription setting forth that they were presented by the Kakanui constituency, as a token of their appreciation of their members' effort* to forward the interests of the district Captain Matheson, in making the presentation, said he had been requested by the residents of Kakanui to present their members each with a piece of plate, as a tangible mark of the esteem they were | held in for the unselfish manner in which they had performed their duties in the House of Representatives since their election. It had been said that they were both Oamaru men, and that they had done much for Oamaru. From the position which that town held as a commercial centre, they would not have been doing their duty had they neglected it* interests. But they had not failed to look after the welfare of the other districts, and it was for this that they were deserving of their thanks. He had great pleasure in making the presentation. Mr HUlop in reply said, that if anything woold be likely to interfere with the resolution he had half formed, to give up politic* altogether, and attend to his own business, it was the teeling created by such m presentation m tbia. He thanked the Kakanui people very much for their handsome present, and felt assnred, by the harmonious way in which they had got along, that no matter what minor differences they might have, he would not be altogether unsuccessful were he at any future time to again woo their voice*. (Applause.) Mr Shrimski also feelingly responded. He felt thankful, not only for the handsome present, but for the kindly feeling which prompted Captain Mathesons remarks. It would always be his endeavor to advance the interests of the district, which he was honored in representing. (Hear, hear.) The meeting then broke up.
