GAZETTES IN BANKRUPTCY.

Referring. to the recent article of the "Daily Times," on this subject, the " Timaru Herald writes : — As regards the particular circumstance of this journal having been appointed a Gazette, under the Debtors' and Creditors' Act, for 1 itnaru and Oamaru, we may say that that appointment was merely the result of our being the first of the two daily papers circulating in the district, to apply for it. We did so some few days before the termination of the old year, at the instance of the legal profession here, in order to avert great incom enience in case of bankruptcy cases arising without a Gazette being appointed ; and were as much surprised as anybody to find that our Oamaru contemporary has hot been included in the list. That omission is explained very satisfactorily in an article in the "North Otago Times" of Saturday last, which we ! publish elfewbere ; an article which demolishes at once the base imputations -against the -Government and the Press, conveyed in the discreditable article of the " Otago Daily Times." ' In concluding our remarks upon this subject we may remind our Dunedin contemporary, that its own character for

purity irnot such that it can afford to act censof to others. On too many occasions it has attracted attention by its barefaced venality; and if the public estimate does not do it great injustice, its. columns are more frequently and more easily bought and sold than those of any other paper in the Colony.
