The new uniforms for the Band of No. 8 Compan} 1 , were isbued on Tuesday evening. The dross consists of a white flannel shell jacket with scarlet facings, black cord trimmings and steel buttons ; and the trousers and cap of black, with scarlet stripes and band. Mr Wilson Giay holda hi» next Court on Tuesday, 6th October.

By the kindness of the Hon. Secietary to the Papakaio School Committee, W. G. Filleul, Esq., we have permission to publish the following letter, received by that gentleman from Mr Hislop, the Government Inspector of Schools. Mr Hislop writes: — "I examined thoPapakaio School on the 16th inst., and I think it due to Mrs Trotter to inform tho School Committee that I was highly pleased with the manner in which the pupils acquitted themselves, and with the progress they had evidently made undor that lady's care. The discipline of the school is well maintained, and from all I saw and heard I have been led to form a very decided opinion that Mis Trotter has proved herself to be a compotent teacher, and that she has been most faithful, painstaking, and successful in the performance of her official duties. When I take into consideration the number of young people now receiving a sound educatiou, who would on account of their ago, have been in a short time beyond the reach of school instruction, I am very thankful that the Papakaio school has been established, and that the services of so suitable a teacher have been secured." The bill for the approaching Garrick Club performance will be found in our advei tising columns, and presents many attiactivo features. Many of our wellknown amateurs take part in the representation, the cast including almost every name known to local fame. " To Paris and back for Lo," upoa which the curtain liaes, has, been beforo given by the Club with marked success, and we have no doubt will go off equally well on this occasion. Next follows "Make your Wills ;" and the perf ormance concludes with the laughable burlesque of " Lord Lovel and Nancy Bell." We need not advise the public to crowd the house, as we are quite sure that everybody means to go, aud to take his wife if he has one. In the Resident Magistrate's Court, on Tuesday, the following cases wore disposed of : — Andrew Baker v. J. Lewis.— Claim for horse hire, L15 10s. Judgment for plaintiff, with costs. Page aad Stidolph v. J. Lewis. —Claim for woik and labor done, L18 37s. 3d. Judgment for plaintiffs, with costs. Samuel iBusbateh v. Jarvis White.— Claim for work and labor done, L8 15a. Judgement for plaintiff for L5 and LI 14s. costs. A cattle trespass case was aLo disposed of. On Thursday, the following persons were each fined in the sum of 2s. 6d. for cattle tiespass, viz., Geoige Oir, Andiew Baker, John Hamilton, and Janieb May. The following return of the s.tiength of tho vaiious companies of Voluuteeis in this Pioviuce appeals m the New Zealand Gazette of the 7th instant. The men aie ,clat>sed as efficient and uoii-effioient :— Duncdm Aiulluiy, E., 63; JN.E., 3-06. No. 1 (City Guaidb), E., 68 ; N.E., 1(3— 84. No. 2 (Scottish), E. 60 ; N.E., 11—71. The Aitillery heads the list with an average of 38 '00 points ; the Waikaii coming) next with 30 60, the other companies having fiist-class ranges following in the older given :— Dunedin Naval, 30 07 ; No. 1 Company (City Guards), 29 04; No. 2 (Scottish), 28-93 ; No. 5 (South District), 27 '50,- No. 6 (Noith Dunedin), 26"75; No. 9 (West Taioii), 23 61. Tho " Daily Mail" writes as follows : — '" We are informed that the Austiahau and New Zealand Land Company (limited), have this year so>vn in wheat alone, on the Totara farm, near Oamaiu, above 3000 acres. On a single paddock containing 1000 acres, duiiug a late visit to tho noith, we observed, at the loadside, on the Company's estate, eight teams at woik, with three hoises di awing each plough. Tho fai in-house recently elected at Sebastopol by the Company is, without exception, the most palatial-looking structiue of all the pnvate residences we have witnessed in this Piovince. It is situated on a rising ground at a short distance from the Oamaru road, and the sunoundmg giounds are being laigely planted out with forest tiees. Tho building is of tho beautiful white sandstone of the district, and foims an attiacfcive landmaik for mauy miles arouud on all sides." Captain Robinson, of the Freetiader, brought, on the last tiip of that vessel from Hobar Town, a package of hop sets. Ihey have anived in beautiful condition, having been sent by Alexander Riddoch, Esq., of Turrif Lodge, New Norfolk, Tasmania, at the request of G. £1 a i per, Esq., for the express purpose of endeavoring to intioduce the cultivation of hops in this district. Messrs Tooth of Sydney, have, for four seasons past bought the entire produce (averaging 250 pockets) of the hopyaid from which these plants have been obtained. The thanks of the community are due to Messis Riddoch and Harpei for their disinterested efforts, which, we trust, will be crowned with success. We aie the nioie indebted lo the former gentleman, in that at the very time the plants were foiwaided by the Fieetrader, he (Mr Riddoch) had much larger ordeis for hop-sets from Melbourne and Sydney, than he was able to supply. The " Southland Times," in a recent issue, reports the anival of the Maua, from Howland's Island, with 1000 tons of guano ; and we notice by an advei fcisement in another column, that Mi James Ashcroft h:is been appointed agent m Oamaru for the hale of this very valuable manure, which will doubtless eie long be bi ought into extensive use upon our agnculluial lands. The following Ordinances passed at the last session of the Otago Provincial Council have received the Governoi's assent, viz. :- "The Dunedin Reserves Leasing aud Salo Ordinance," "The Harbor Reclaimed Lauds Sale and Leasing Oidmance," "The Shag Point Coal lleseive Leasing Ordinance," and " The Waiepa Schoolmaster's Residence and Glebe Lands Leasing Oidmauce." The Wellington Correspondent of the " Daily Times,'' under date 22nd Scptembei, telegraphs as follows : — "The 'alann' resolution is to be continued this evening, and it is hoped, will toumuale to-monow night. The division will be very close, but ifc is impossible to say what its lesult will be. Mete Kingi, who piomised Mr M'Lean to vote for his resolution, went by yesteiday'a early morning coaoh to Wanganui — it is said on official or semi-official business. Theie was a Government caucus to-day. Gicat uneasiness prevails in that paity, the Government having intimated at Saturday's caucus that it was fouud impossible to c.uiy out their pio2oosed adjustment (i.e., compensation to tho Piovmces) this ytai." The "Evening Star" has the following:—" The state of tho weather at Oauuru is now exhibited at the telegraph office ; and it would be of importauce to the Meicantile community and the puLlic in general, if the anivais at <uid departuies fiom Oamaru and Timaru were also exhibited. Now that steam communication with those places is moie fiequent, the same indulgence should be granted to them as lo other ports of the Colony." " Semi-Pakeha" wiites to the " Daily Times" with refeience to a paiagiaph in the "Waikouaiti Herald" of last week, impugning his statements on the subject of Ilau-hauisin m that district. He asserts that Mr lloss is not, as stated by the " Herald," the schoolmaster at the Pah, nor is he the instructor or confidential adviser of the Maoris. He adds : — " Since the inauguiation of the new leligion, great mortality has taken place amongst the Natives, some twelve persons having died during the last month. Mr Koss states that no European doctors have been at the village. This being so, the character of the distemper is unknown. Tho Maons are desperately in want of spiritual and bodily comfoits."

A correspondent writing from Aberdeenshire, under dato the 9th of July, to a gentleman resident in Oamaru, says that the crops in that County, and in Morayshire, which formerly used to rank as the " meal gimal" of the north of Scotland, have been dreadfully burnt up by the drought. He says " Our great promise of spring is likely to result in the scantiest harvest that has been reaped in this country since the famous 1826. It is still dry." 1826 was, it will be remomberod, a year of famine in Scotland, being commonly called " the year of the white peas," in consequence of its having been necessaiy to import white peas laigely from the Continent to keep numbers of the people from absolute starvation. "We are glad to perceive that a Dunedin contempoarry has taken up a matter to which wo have often drawn attention, viz., the bad atate of the north road near Kakanui. The "Daily MaiP writes:— "We would direct the attention of tho Road Department to a very bad piece of road, which might more correctly be termed a sludge channel, situated on the main north road, near Kakanui. The recent rains, just previous to our visit, had drained to this low-lying ground across the road line, and hoises in passing through, had to wade up to their bellies in sludge and mud. A few days before our visit an Otepopo storekeeper, in returning from Oamaru in his spring cart, had his load upset in tho middle of this slough of despond, liis horse having become imbedded in its murky sliminess, in which the owner had to wade for an hour before succeeding in extricating his hoise and cart, and in consequence of his cold bath of mud and water, has since been suffering from severe indisposition. Wo observe that the main north road is now being metalled from Oamaru southwards, and would suggest that the workmen should have their attention speedily directed to the spot indicated." Vincent Pike, Esq., has been appointed a Resident Magistrate for tho Otago Goldfields District, and also a Coroner within the Colony ; and Lowther Broad, Esq., has been appointed Resident Magistrate for the District of Hauraki. Tho following persons have been appointed Postmasters : — Papakaio, John Peattie ; Upper Waitaki Ferry, Henry Schluter.
