SMUGGLING.

(To tho Editor of tlio Oajiaru Times.) Sib, — As one of those who refused to subscribe towards the fund raised to enable Captain Gordon H'Kinnon, of the barque Oollingwood, to pay a justfine imposed upon him lately by an Oamaru Bench of Magistrates, for selling tobacco which had not paid tho duty, I enter a solemn protest against the fair fame of the place being damaged by the acts of a few eelf-styled philanthropists. I would beg all who may read this, and to whoso knowledge the circumstance of some of tho residents in Oamaru having paid Captain M'Kinnon's fine .may have come, to clearly understand that there are, fortunately for the credit of the place, many who refused to give the aid solicited from, them, and I would suggest that a list of the subscribers be published, bo that tho " right saddle may be put on the right horse." By tho act of a few in this matter, I consider the commercial fame of the town greatly tarnished, and the inhabitants must not' be surprised if they find soon the soubriquet of " Smugglers' Bay " attached to their harbor. Such aiding and abetting of smuggling (for it can bo called by no other name, however innocent tho culprit in this instance may have been in his intentions) is little in keeping with tho high social stand Oumaru haB always taken and deserves to take. I am, &c, Anti-Smuggler.
