AUCKLAND.
(From tho " Southern Cross," July 12.) bKPAllTURE OF WILLIAM TIIOMPSON FOR WELLINGTON. " Her Majesty's s.s. Esk, Captain Luco, left the harbor yesterday, via tho Thames, for tho purpose of convoying the chief William Thompson to that city. Thompson, it is stated, will bo in waiting at the mouth of the Thames, in readiness to embark, so that no delay will tako placet It was tho intention, wo believe, of Mr John Whito to have accompanied the chief to Wellington, as tho visit has boon in a great measure brought about by that gentleman ; but owing to a family bereavement, ho found it impossible to leave Auckland yesterday. Thoro has been another firo in Anokland, which destroyed a number of houses in Hopoton-street. A man named Kelly is under arrest on a charge of idling gunpowder to natives at Mongonui. Tho East Coast natives are very badly off, and appear to bo quite sick of war. Tho Eaglan and Kawhia natives are still suffering from fever. Deaths are vci-y frequent. The Council of tho Northern Association has held a meeting, at which tho following resolution was adopted : — " That a petition bo presented to tho Assembly, praying for separation of the Northern and Southern Islands of New Zealand." It is something favorablo to tho desired issue of this question, that tho Imperial Q-ovornmont should recommend tho reconsideration of the subject to tho Colonial Legislature. This bespeaks no hostility to tho proposal, •nd a wish so see further into the question.
