County Roads and Roadworks

At the monthly meeting of the Mangonui County Council, with Mr. W. J. Steed in the chair, held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday last, the council engineer (Mr. A. M. Theed) made report on conditions in the various ridings of the council as follows: With more settled weather conditions road surfaces have stabilised, and seasonal heavy grading has been in hand. Houhora Riding. Lower end of Great Noi-th Road received 731 cubic yards of metal, and repair metal is being delivered on Ngataki-Te Kao section. Grading was done and growth cut. Grading was also done on West Coast, Kaimaumau, Spains, and LTnahi Roads.

Awanui Riding.—Repair metal was delivered to Pekerau (44 cubic yards) and Duncans Road (10 cubic yards). Graders trued up Kumi and Quarry Roads. Oruru Riding.—Bridge repair included replacement of planks in two bridges on Taylors Road and one on Paranui, several on Fern Flat Road, and the replacement of a stringer and some decking on Jones Bridge, Te Koroa Road. Two stringers will now be replaced in Shepherds Bridge, Fern Flat Road. Metal repair included 27 cubic yards on Oruru-Taipa, 41 cubic yards on Paranui, 6 cubic yards on Taylors, 221 cubic yards on Peria-Valley, and 9 cubic yards on Parapara Roads. Mangonui Riding.—Metal patching was done on Kohumaru Road (5 cubic yards), S. Fosters (71 cubic yards), Hihi (3 cubic yards), Mill Bay (3 cubic yards), Oruru-Mangonui (6 cubic yards), and Barriballs (6 cubic yards). Victoria Valley Riding.—Metal repair included 21 cubic yards to Mangatoetoe, 20 cubic yards to Kitchens, 15 cubic yards to Te Rore, and 15 cubic yards to Diggers Valley. Grading was done on Takahue, Snelgars, Duncans, Mangatoetoe, Gardiners, Traceys, Metcalfes, Wallaces, Te Rore, and Dawsons Access Roads. On Snelgars, Duncans, and Mangatoetoe Roads th e tractor and offset grader cleared

tables, and gangs have opened culverts and cleaned inlet and outlet drains. Approaches to Kitchens Bridge wer e damaged by flood and restored. A culvert was replaced with pipes on Peria-Valley Road and deck planks renewed on Whites Bridge on Panthers Road. Heavy grading of Te Rore Road is now in hand. Kaitaia Riding.—Grading was done on Ruaroa, Church, Reeds, Cloughs, and Fryers Roads, and on the latter the tractor and offset grader pulled out tables, while growth was cut and [ culverts and drains opened. Herekino Riding.—Bridge near Brydon’s on Diggers Valley Road required repairs, and 20 cubic yards of patch metal was delivered to the same road. Two and a-half cubic yards of metal was delivered to Smiths Road. Ahipara Riding.—Roma Road was graded and 33J cubic yards of repair metal put on. Growth was cut on Okahu Block Road, and the grader has formed up the road. When formation has set some sandstone will be spread on weak places. Government Grants.—Paranui-Otu-kai (Dawsons Access). Arrangements wer e made for formation contractor to complete his contract. Quarrying of metal is in hand, and delivery has commenced to completed sections of the road.
