VETERINARY SERVICE
The advantages of establishing a veterinary service in the district were the subject of an address to suppliers at Wednesday’s Dairy Co. meeting, delivered bv Mr. G. V. T. Evans. Mr. Evans estimated that the value of dairy cattle in this district amounted to £300,000 on current market prices and contended that such valuable assets and the means whereby the greater part of the community derived its living required the insurance provided by a veterinarian. The President, Mr. E. R. Bird, speaking in support of Mr. Evans’ motion that consideration be given to securing the services of a quaified veterinary practitioner, said that reports from the Rodney district showed that the expenses of such a service were not as great as had been anticipated and that some of the savings effected had been spectacular. In this district it had been found that the cost on butterfat was slight and that it was accepted as worthwhile without question. If formed through the Dairy Company, said Mr. Bird, the services of a Veterinary Club’s officer would be available to meat and wool farmers but a slight preference would be given to Company suppliers. He hoped that the need for this would not arise. While full consideration was given, to the difficulties of housing an appointee and providing transport, it was resolved that approaches be made to the appropriate authorities for information regarding the availability of qualified men.
