Car and Truck Collide

Accident on Awanui Bridge A light car driven by Mr. Allen Couchman of Awanui, was involved in a collision with a truck, owned by the Northern Co-operative Carrying Association Ltd. and driven by Mr. Lance Beard, on the Awanui Bridge at about midday on Friday. The surface of the bridge was wet after recent rain and the brakes of both vehicles apparently failed to hold when applied. Visibility on both approaches to the bridge is poor and after the recent rain the decking was slippery and there was insufficient room to pass. Mrs. Couchman, who was with her husband, was thrown against the windshield of the car, under the force of the impact, and received cuts about the face and head. She was admitted to the Mangonui County Hospital shortly after the accident, but was able to return to her home on Saturday after receiving treatment. The car which was travelling in a northerly direction, was extensively damaged
