MANGONUT OUTCLASSES MAORIS FROM AUCKLAND The filial representative game oi tile seasm played against a team oi Maoris from Auckland resulted-in an easy wii for Mangonui by 47 points to 6—l* tries and 7 conversions to 2 tries. Conditions were in keeping with wirier and this no doubt affected the which was only moderate in c®iparison with earlier games. . Howemr, those who braved the elements ha% a most enjoyable afternoon’s entelfcinment. Actually it was not that® Mangonui played so well as a tear% but it was the slapdash haphazartwnanner in which they accomplished score. The opposition, played reasonabliy well until half fcne when the scoreboard read 13 p&nts to 3, but thereafter it was aArocession of tries. The visitors wejfc robust enough but apart from or.qjjor two exceptions, were far from Mobile and the home team had a me* enjoyable time. Hilton Jameson at Hirst five-eighths, added more thruA to the Mangonui backs than other game this season, and itiiiow seems a tactical error that Jojr Murray should have wasted his uowers throughout the Harding S hie jo game in not playingin his usual wisition. There wer® solo runs in plenty ; the visitors be attacking, and someone, either forwards or "backs, would securejb-o make a spectacular run which ncflrly always resulted in a. try. Joe IjMurray scored a real gem in this banner. Lloyd McCann added to hi* extensive rep scoring since he started his phenomenal run last season—Juries and 5 goals were his contribution this game but with the his goal kicking and his extraordiiSry pace when he scored, there wasjftittle to enthuse about his play. Perhaps it was just as well, but the paying fans hate to see such indifferent casJdalness irrespective of what the scores. Young Ted Henare at fullback, mkde a few mistakes, but showed plenty of enterprise and should be an a|Set to the- County for a long time t<i<come. The forward* all had their moments, though sfene showed more ambition than othtste, particularly Northland rep, Chailie Stirling, who _ did everything ball but score a try, and he ev<*£ did McCann out of an extra goal ivhen he attempted a conversion with|#he assistance of the referee, but th® turf with all the power of his fifteen stone behind ; t went further th» the ball. The visitors aw?ays tried to make a game out of tfe few opportunities that came their £iay and eventually were allowed a *iot of latitude in spoiling ,but all no avail. Their captain, Puriri, newer let up in the forwards and theWiman tank, Zimmerman, was an aak- assistant. In the backs Niwa andjsfatriek worked like trojans, and thsy~ were unlucky when young Brady was«injured. Zimmerman and Kani werevfhe try-get-ters. For Mangonui the scores were : McCann (2 tries, 5 (3 tries), Murray, Ted Smit^' Hilton Jameson, C. Wright, L. LloyJT and K. Werner (1 each) ; Silva each converted a try). %. Mr. J. E. Wilkinson was refi£ree. THE CURTAIN-RAISERS Fourth Grade Efmal The final of the firstjjpourth grade championship conducted by the Rugby Union for thejPCowie Shield, resulted in a win for Awanui against Kaitaia. One try by Ivan Yuretich in the closing stages, «as the deciding factor in a remarkalfcf even game. There is little to worry a«out for the future of Rugby while me County has talent such as was sh<mn in this splendid final. Ik Mr. C. Berghan was refere^ Te Rarawa Juniors v. Pei|a Whether patrons were disap|K>inted in the senior game that foljpwed or not, they certainly receivedggood value for their money in the watch, Te Rarawa (leaders of the junior competition) against Peria, which resulted in a draw, 6 points alji Both teams made themselves available at short notice, after jfhe City team from Whangarei canceled their visit. Both teams revelled in the conditions which a hail storm, but dour defence sShs one of the features of the game£ while no opportunity was lost in learning defence into attack. Te Rarawa scored two tries in the first spill, both by winger, Ken Tepene, who showed outstanding pace for a grade boy. Biff Ru, first five-eighths for Peria, has ability above and it was surprising to le-9«e that he did get an opportunity nl\the trials. He beat the defence witrfka lovely side-step and dummy to se%i Olsen over for Peria’s first poinf£. Te Rarawa had to battle hard in closing stages to keep their line ihA tact, but Ray Mills halved the mat® with an excellent penalty goal shorV ly before full time. Mr. J. Sowter was referee. ® BAY RETAINS HARDING SHIELD For the second year in succession, the Bay of Islands senior representative team holds the Harding Shield. The final challenge, by Northern Wairoa, was played at Kaikohe on Saturday and resulted in a draw, 12 all. The try which put Northern Wairoa on even terms with the Bay, was scored right on time by Walters from a dash from a line-out by Nash who was backed up by McEwing. Suspense during those last few seconds was terrific as the conversion was attempted and many a Bay fan breathed freely for the first time throughout
the game when Mr. F. Williams blew the final whistle as the ball was secured after the kick had failed. Northern Wairoa pressed the Bay ; 0 to the limit from the kick-off and, had ! the former team had one reliable boot ! >f there is no doubt that the Shield j »f would have changed hands. In the | n absence'of three of his star back sup■s ports, Cherrington, Paewai and brotho er Peter, J. B. Smith was heavily 8' taxed ar.d even his genius could not d have averted defeat had the opposiI- tion been kicking consistently. L- * .!
