FAIRBURNS NEWS CHURCH WELCOME

A very enjoyable function took place in the Fairburns church on Friday evening last when a welcome was extended by the Church to all those from our district who served overseas during the recent war. The function 1 took the form of a high tea and shortly after 6.30 a good crowd of local people and a few visitors sat down to well-filled tables. This part of the proceedings was the Responsibility of the Ladies’ Guild and the catering was done with typical efficiency. Tea was followed by a short break and then a short but select concert programme was presented. This included songs by Miss Shirley Whitburn, cornet solos by Mr. Lindsay, vocal quartettes by Misses Dadson and Ericsson and Messrs. Powley and Gilmore and an elocutionary item by Rev. Gilmore. Interspersed with the items were speeches of welcome by ■Mrs. A. Tracey and Messrs. H. Parker, T. Coulter, J. Dawson, A. Tracey and Rev. Gilmore. My. Deb Coulter replied on behalf of the returned boys.' During the evening the people stood in an act of silent remembrance while the roll of honour was read. After a period of devotions supper was served and brought a very pleasant function to a close.
