Kaitaia Cricket Club

Annual General Meeting The annual general meeting of the Kaitaia Cricket Club was held in the Kaitaia Public Library last Thursday evening. Mr. R. Kelly (President) was in the chair, and there was a good attendance of members and a sprinkling of newcomers. President’s Address In his presidential address Mr. Kelly paid tribute to the prowess of several players who would not be available this season owing to military duties, and stated that their absence would be severely felt. The loss of these players would be offset by the infusion of fresh blood, and Mr. Kelly said he felt assured that the same spirit of team co-operation would prevail in the coming series of matches. Referring to the past season’s play, the President said that although the Kaitaia team had not won all its games, bright cricket had been provided against some strong teams. The season commenced with eight teams participating, but toward the middle of the series this total had been reduced to four, owing to the transfer of service sides to other areas. The prospects for the coming season were particularly bright, and interesting games should result among teams from the Air Force, Awanui, Victoria Valley, and a side from the newlyinstituted Young People’s Club (Kaitaia). New Playing Ground Much discussion arose as to the choice of a playing field in Kaitaia, and it was generally conceded that the proposed change from Sunray Park to the Showgrounds was a step in the right direction. The question of means to finance the alterations necessary to the Showgrounds wicket was a problem to be considered, and a committee consisting of the president, secretary, club captain and another was authorised to go into the matter, with power to act. It was unanimously agreed that a token be sent to Mr. G. Rickard in appreciation of services rendered to the club in his capacity of honorary auditor since 1929. That the club should do all in its power to assist the Young People’s Club in the formation of a cricket team was also agreed upon. Election of Officers Officers elected for the ensuing season are as follows: President —Mr. R. Kelly; Secretary—Mr. P. Stone; Club Captain and Selector —Mr. B. Wilson; Committee President, Secretary, Club Captain and Mr. W. Bestic; Hon. Auditor—Mr. C. Hedditch.
