N.Z. Farmers’ Union

Meeting Bay Sub-Provincial Executive The quarterly meeting of the Bay of Islands Sub-Provincial Executive was held in the Kaitaia Public Library on Tuesday July 27, Mr. J. W. Jones presiding. The Chairman introduced Mr. A. J. Dow, the new assistant provincial secretary, and a great variety of matters affecting the farmers and their interests were discussed. The change in the official candidate for the Meat Board was explained by Mr. Jones who said that this had been considered advisable in view of the projected fusion of the Farmer’s Union with the Sheepowner’s Federation, which fusion was now almost an established fact. Mr. C. B. Michie gave a comprehensive report on the proceedings at the Provincial Conference in Auckland, and explained the procedure adopted regarding remits which were not sent to the Dominion Conference.

The matter of cream grading received considerable attention and Mr. Michie said there was a tendency on the part of New Zealand butter graders to force Managers to put less salt in the butter, and that a percentage decrease in salt from two to one point would represent a loss of £BOO to the Kaitaia Dairy Company. The following remits were passed: “That the Farmers Union supports the candidature of Mr. F. N. Smith as representative for the Auckland Province on the electoral college of the Meat Board.” “That clothing and footwear be made available for all women and girls engaged in farm work.” “That producers of porkers receive the same price per pound as producers of baconers, including payment for heads.” “That the Provincial Executive makes enquiries as to the difference in price paid to the farmer for a JLt on the hoof, and the price chargidin the shops.” “That in view of the serious short-

age of fertilisers and the urgent need for lime, the Government be urged to speed up the crushing and delivery of this product, and that orders be supplied in rotation as received.”
