Death of Mr. Thomas Maugham

An early and highly respected resident of Victoria Valley has passed away in the person of Mr. Thomas Maugham who died at his son’s residence on Thursday of last week at the advanced age of eighty years. The late Mr. Maugham who was born in Boston,. Lincolnshire, England on May 16th 1859, came to New Zealand with his parents in the sailing ship “Cashmere” in 1862. After living in Auckland for a few years the family took up residence in Mangonui where his father was proprietor of the “Old Oak” Hotel. Upon the death of Mr. Maugham Snr., the family returned to Boston, where after Mr. Thomas Maugham received his education, they again came to New Zealand, settling in Auckland. In this town Mr. Maugham was married and came north in 1890, engaging in the farming of some of the best land in Victoria Valley where he has lived ever since. He was a Justice of the Peace, a member of the County Council for some years, and was a Director of the Kaitaia Dairy Company for a considerable time in the early stages of the Company’s development. In the sporting world he was a champion boxer and a most enthusiastic cricketer. He was one of the few who received the King George VI Coronation Medal. He leaves a wife and family of five : Mrs. A. A. Gardiner of Kaiaka, Mrs. R. Coulter of Fairburn, Mrs. Morgan of Auckland, Mrs. Reid of Whangarei, and Mr. T. W. Maugham of Victoria Valley. There are a number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Two brothers also survive him, Mr. Frank Maugham of Pe»»a and Mr. Ted Maugham of Maungatapere. The funeral which was widely attended took place in Victoria Valley on Friday and was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Taylor.
