Basketball Season to Open Soon
Committee Elected The Mangonui Basketball Assoeiai tion held its annual meeting on SatI urday afternoon, the following being elected to the Committee : President and Secretary—Miss K. Urlich ; VicePresident—Miss A. Hodgson ; Delerates —Misses C. Lunjevich and L. May (Kaitaia), Misses A. Hodgson and E. Donaldson (Old Pupils), Miss:s G. and W. Bastard (Takahue). The High School and Pukepoto teams were .ot represented at the meeting. It was decided that the competitions would be similar to previous years, playing for the Kapa Shield and badges at the end of the season. It was also decided that games should rot start later than 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining . uitable courts, no definite date for opening was able to be fixed but it is probable that there will be the usual tournament on the King’s Birthday. The possibility of the Association laying down courts in the A. and P. grounds is being considered but although the Association holds funds totalling £25 for this purpose, no definite decision has yet been reached. To mark the opening of the season a grand dance will be held shortly. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE OF EXPORT BEEF Chiller Quality Maintained Since the commencement of the war no chilled beef has been imported into the United Kingdom, but ns New Zealand’s chilled beef production had grown rapidly prior to the war, and the overseas market showed great potentialities, the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board considers it most essential to maintain and even improve present day quality of chiller beef production. With this object in view, the Board is continuing to offer substantial prizes in the various districts for cattle suitable for chilled beef. It is hoped where possible that A. and P. Societies will arrange a field day when the cattle are judged in order to demonstrate to farmers the type of animal required. To meet the requirements of the British Government, all our chiller quality cattle are now being shipped as frozen beef. It may be mentioned, however, that in the discussions between the New Zealand Government and the British authorities, the New Zealand Meat Producers Board especially arranged through the New Zealand Government, that the special quality of our chiller beef should be recognised in the price offered, even though the beef was frozen instead of being shipped as chilled.
